Finding Your Identity in Christ

Who Are You?

If I ask you this question? What will your answer be?

Will you define yourself based on your professional qualifications, cultural background, financial status, educational qualification, job, what the society says about you etc?

Whatever you say is your perception of your identity. Your identity is who you define yourself to be.

Did you notice that we usually define ourselves based on external factors? But what happens when those things aren’t in the best light?

We begin to attach negative labels to ourselves. It is impossible to have a secure sense of self when we place our identity in external factors that change rapidly. This is why many people are broken and have a difficult time living to their fullest potential because they don’t see who they really are.

What Does It Mean To have Your Identity In Christ?

We can only fully live when we come into a relationship with our creator (through Jesus Christ), understand who he made us to be and believe that we are who he says we are.

This is what it means to have your identity in Christ.

Regardless of how you feel at any point, or who you used to be, or what you’re going through, your identity in your loving Father is who you are for all eternity. Because Jesus died and rose again for the forgiveness of your sins, when you received His sacrifice as a gift to you, you instantly became His. A child of God, this is who you are.

Steps To Finding Your Identity In Christ

Are you still struggling to find your identity in Christ? The following steps will guide you to do so.

  1. It begins with a true relationship with Christ. The truth is, until you choose to become a child in God’s family, the things He says about His children won’t apply to you. If you don’t have that relationship yet, you can start right now. How? Confess your sins to Jesus, make up your mind to forsake them and ask Him for the grace to do so, ask Him to come into your heart. Rev 3: 20
  2. Identify the lies that you’ve believed

from the devil and the society, then find the truth  (ie what God says in the scripture about them). Here are some truths from God’s word. Take some time to reflect on these truths of who you are and receive them in humility
    • You are His own special possession. (1 Peter 2:9, Deuteronomy 14:2)
    • You are chosen, handpicked by the God who created the universe. (1 Peter 2:9, Jeremiah 1:5, Ephesians 1:3-4)
    • You are treasured. (Deuteronomy 7:6 14:2, 26:18)
    • You are irreplaceable. (1 Thessalonians 1:4)
    • You are loved beyond compare. (1 John 4:19, 4:10, 3:16, Romans 5:8, 8:35-39)
    • You are worth dying for. (1 John 3:16, Romans 5:7-9)
    • You are forgiven. (Ephesians 1:7, 1 John 1:9, Romans 8:1, 33-39)
    • You are His child. (1 John 3:1, Galatians 3:26)
    • You are secured for all eternity. (2 Corinthians 1:22, John 10:28-29)
    • You are set free. (Romans 6:18, Galatians 5:1)
    • You are precious to Him. (Isaiah 43:4)
    • You are set apart. (John 15:16, 19, I Peter 2:9)
  1. Soak yourself in God’s word and make meditation on His word a habit. While you’re in this world, the devil will not stop telling you lies and the society will not stop trying to fix you into their own boxes. But when you know the word of God, you’re able to live above them. Romans 12:2 – You transform your life by keeping your mind renewed through God’s word.

Now that you have found your identity in Christ, you don’t have to accept world cultures to prove anything to the world. In fact, you should reject them because you are of a different breed. A cat will not go about swimming in the mire with pigs so as to feel accepted, neither should you be conformed to the world and their way of life.

I pray for you, that you receive grace to truly understand who you are in Christ and to walk in that consciousness everyday.

Shalom
